Archetypal Astrology
“When we know and are aware of the planetary movements and conditions, and integrate them into our lifestyles, we can then be in alignment with the energies that they bring to support us.”
– Karen Bishop, Staying in Alignment
Archetypal astrology views the planets and signs as dynamic, symbolic forces that shape and influence a person’s life. It is based on the idea that the universe is a living, evolving consciousness of which we are a part. There is a correspondence between what happens in the heavens, and what we experience here on Earth. This is what is meant by the quotation “As above, so below. As within, so without,” attributed to ancient Hermetic teachings.
Through archetypal astrology, we explore the symbolic patterns and forces influencing someone’s life. Unlike traditional astrology, which focuses on predictions, archetypal astrology delves into the deeper meaning of planetary patterns and how they influence a person’s potential, growth, and suggest productive ways to meet life challenges.
What are Archetypes?
Archetypes are universal templates containing themes and symbols shared across cultures and through time. The word archetype means ‘first form’ and refers to an original pattern, prototype, or blueprint.
Each archetype has a generalized essence that gives rise to a multitude of specific forms and expressions that reveal its intrinsic nature. Although we can never directly observe an archetype in its totality, we can gain a sense of its essential motivation, attributes, and behavior through observation of its outward expressions and particular manifestations.
Mythology and literature give us many examples of archetypes, such as the Hero, the Sage, the Lover, and the Rebel. Carl Jung, one of the most influential psychologists in modern history, defined archetypes as universal principles, innate potentials, and living forces within our psyche and humanity’s collective unconscious. The commonality of archetypes across humankind makes characters in myths and stories understandable and relatable for us all.
What is Astrology?
Astrology is the study of the observed relationship between planetary patterns in the sky and the human experience on Earth. By studying astrological charts, we can recognize how these archetypes operate within us and in our world.
The planets, luminaries, and other celestial bodies represent archetypal forces that drive us, influencing our subconscious motivations, cognitive processes, and behaviors. The planets in your birth chart can be thought of as living consciousnesses. Their sign, placement, and relationship dynamics symbolize how they function in you and in your life.
Astrology helps you to understand archetypal forces within your psyche and learn how to skillfully use, express, and integrate them into a coherent whole.
