The personal, or inner planets in astrology are the Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn. These planets are visible to the naked eye in the night sky. For this reason they comprised the entire set of archetypal principles and symbols used in astrology until the invention of the telescope in modern times. They are associated with the basic motivations, drives, needs, and desires of humans as they navigate the physical, material world.
The discovery of Uranus in 1781, Neptune in 1846, and Pluto in 1930 provided new symbolic archetypal principles for astrology. These outer planets are often termed ‘transpersonal,’ meaning they pertain to humanity in general, to the collective, or a generation of people born during the transit of the planet through a single sign of the zodiac. They correlate with significant scientific, cultural and political movements and paradigm shifts in human history. In the personal horoscope, they are often interpreted in a very general way.
In his book Astrology as a Spiritual Path, Birth of the New Human, Jim Sher describes the transpersonal planets as transformational archetypal principles that lead us into a new state of consciousness. We become aware of ourselves as something more than a individual ego-self operating in the mundane world. We question who we are, why we are here, and the purpose of our existence. Uranus, Neptune and Pluto initiate us into a process of moving from identification with our ego-self, to what psychologist Carl Jung called the Individuating Self. Working with the processes of the transpersonal planets we grow and evolve. We transform our relationship to the past: we digest past experiences, assimilate the learning from them, and then release them in order to prepare for our next cycle of growth.
All three transpersonal planets are in the process of changing signs, moving from Earth and Water into Fire and Air. Pluto moved from Capricorn (Earth) into Aquarius (Air) on November 19, 2024. Neptune moves from Pisces (Water) into Aries (Fire) on March 30, 2025. Finally Uranus leaves Cancer (Water) and enters Gemini (Air) on July 7, 2025. This signals a new paradigm shift in human consciousness, which will develop over the coming 10 years.
Not only are the transpersonal planets moving into new elements, but on July 7th they form a configuration that harmonizes and supports the transformational processes of each other. Pluto’s intense and powerful processes will be aided by Uranian breakthroughs and innovation in science and communication technology as they come into a trine aspect. Both planets will be in a sextile to Neptune in Aries, which will work to dissolve and and release the old forms, structures, and consensus reality we held on to in the past. Humanity is on the cusp of a new era.
